Uninscribed signed photograph of a young Justice Douglas

William Orville Douglas, 1898–1980. Associate Justice, Supreme Court of the United States, 1939–1975.  8” x 10” black-and-white photograph signed W O Douglas.

This lithograph bust photo depicts a younger Justice Douglas.  Douglas, who was President Franklin D. Roosevelt’s fourth appointment to the Supreme Court, was only 40 years old when he joined the Court in 1939.  He remains one of the youngest Justices ever to be appointed.  Only four Justices, all appointed in the late 1700s or early 1800s, were younger.  At 36 years, 209 days, he was also the longest-serving Justice.

This image likely dates from the early- to mid-1940s, although the print itself seems to be somewhat newer than that.  Douglas has signed in black ballpoint pen.  The photo has a wide white border that shows a bit of foxing and handling in the wide left margin.  Overall it is in fine condition.
