Signature of Hoover on a Stanford University card

Herbert Clark Hoover, 1874–1964.  31st President of the United States, 1929–1933.  Signature, Herbert Hoover, on a 2” x 3½” Stanford University card.

This small card, imprinted stanford university, california, highlights President Hoover’s long relationship with Stanford University.  Hoover was a student in the inaugural class at Stanford and graduated in 1895.  In 1919, ten years before he would become President, he created the Hoover War Collection at Stanford.  Hoover donated the files from the Commission for Relief in Belgium, the United States Food Administration, and the American Relief Administration, all organizations that Hoover led to provide food to people in Europe during and after World War I.  Hoover also pledged an endowment of $50,000, some $750,000 today.  The collection is now known as the Hoover Institution Library and Archives.

Hoover later accepted the 1928 Republican presidential nomination in a speech at Stanford Stadium.

This card has a bold, brown fountain pen signature by Hoover.  It is toned from prior matting.  There is a tiny foxing spot to the left of, but well away from, Hoover’s signature, and there are couple of rough spots on the surface of the card where it appears that tape from prior mounting was improperly removed.  Overall the card is in fine condition.

Unframed.
