Hermann Göring

Hermann Wilhelm Göring, 1893-1946.  Nazi Reichsmarshall; Luftwaffe commander-in-chief.  Formal portrait of Göring, inscribed and signed to his sister-in-law, Elsa Fock in grateful friendship / Hermann Göring, 1925.

This is an excellent dual-association photograph.  In addition to being signed to Göring’s sister-in-law, it bears the backstamp of the official Nazi party photographer, Heinrich Hoffman, with his address, which doubled as the Nazi party headquarters in the early days of the movement.

This early Hoffman portrait depicts the youthful Göring as the commander-in-chief of the Sturmabteilung, or SA, party’s brown-shirted paramilitary wing, which Adolf Hitler appointed him to head in 1923.  Göring prominently displays the swastika on both his helmet and the armband on his leather coat.  He wears Prussia’s highest military award, the Orden Pour le Mérite, also known as the Blue Max, which he received in World War I for repeated and continual gallantry in action as a German fighter pilot.

Hoffman’s purple stamp, bearing his name and address at Schellingstraße 50 in Munich, is on the back of the mount.  Hitler’s mistress, Eva Braun, worked in Hoffman’s shop, and it was there that Hitler first met her.  Schellingstraße 50 housed the Nazi party headquarters from 1925, the year Göring signed this photo, until 1931.

Elsa Fock was the sister of Göring’s first wife, Carin, and Countess Mary von Rosen, the wife of Swedish Count Eric von Rosen.

This 7” x 9” photograph of Göring is tipped to a heavy paper mount, which is approximately 10 x 13.  The photo has a touch of silvering around the edges.  Göring has inscribed and signed on the mount below the photo.  His hand brushed one word of the inscription, affecting four letters but not the signature.  There is a ⅜” vertical tear in the lower left margin of the mount, affecting nothing.  Overall the piece is in fine condition.
