Truman sends thanks for a contribution to the Truman Library Fund

Harry S. Truman, 1884-1972.  33rd President of the United States, 1945-1953.  Typed Letter Signed, Harry S. Truman, one page, quarto, on engraved personal stationery, July 7, 1965.  With original envelope bearing Truman's printed free frank.

Truman thanks a correspondent for his contribution to the Truman Library Fund and says that he has autographed and is returning his books (not present).  In part:  “Thank you very much for your letter of June 29th, and the contribution you enclosed for the Library Fund.  I more than appreciated it. . . . As you requested, I have signed the two books which you sent and they are being returned to you under separate cover."

Truman was the second president, after Franklin D. Roosevelt, to establish a presidential library to house the papers of his administration.  Roosevelt established his library in Hyde Park, New York, during his presidency.  Truman raised the funds privately to build the Truman Library in Independence, Missouri, on a beautiful hilltop location donated by the City of Independence.  He wanted the Library to be about the presidency, not about him, and wanted it to be a place where students could learn about the presidency of, in his words, "the greatest republic in the history of the world."  The Library, the first to be created under the 1955 Presidential Libraries Act, was dedicated July 6, 1957.  Those in attendance included former President Herbert Hoover, former First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt, and Chief Justice Earl Warren.

Truman has signed this letter with a bold, black fountain pen signature.  The letter has two normal mailing folds, neither of which affects the signature, and is in fine to very fine condition.  The accompanying envelope has some soiling and is in fine condition.
