With the United States deep in World War I, TR sends an Episcopal bishop "heartiest congratulations" for his ”admirable work of citizenship and Americanism" Theodore Roosevelt, 1858-1919. 26th President of the United States. Typed Letter Signed, Theodore Roosevelt, with holograph additions and postscript, one page, 8½” x 11”, on stationery of The Kansas City Star, New York, April 26, 1918. At the height of American involvement in World War I, Roosevelt thanks Bishop James H. Darlington for a poem and congratulates him on his "admirable work of citizenship and Americanism." He writes, in full: "I thank you for the letter and I thank you for the poem; and I don’t think you need fear that you went too far! / With heartiest congratulations upon the admirable work of citizenship and Americanism you are doing, I am, / Faithfully yours . . . ." Roosevelt has corrected the letter by striking a portion of the the typewritten text and penning the words "need fear that you went too far!" He then adds in a handwritten postscript, "I have just met that fine fellow your son, at Fort Totten." Darlington was rector of Christ Church, Brooklyn, and later bishop of the Protestant Episcopal Diocese in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. He cultivated music as an essential aspect of spiritual life and was particularly interested in musical instruments as a way to understand history and build community. He wrote several volumes of hymns and verse, including The Church Hymnal and The Mission Hymnal, and he was a leader in international philanthropy and the ecumenical movement. He donated his collection of musical instruments to Vassar College. This letter is an excellent example of Roosevelt’s holograph. Roosevelt has signed this letter with a bold 4⅜” signature. The letter has horizontal and vertical folds, some marginal wrinkling, and a paper clip stain at the top. Overall it is in fine condition. Unframed.
