803401 Andrew Johnson Click on image for larger size
Andrew Johnson, 1808-1875. 17th President of the United States. Very scarce manuscript Note Signed as President, Andrew Johnson, Pres, no date, no place. This is a highly desirable, excellent content note in which Johnson, the first post-Civil War president, discusses the movement of arms. In full: “I would suggest that Collectors of Customs should consult the Commanders of Posts or Districts as to the aggregate number of guns that can be with safety shipped to such Posts or Districts." This piece has been folded. The middle fold has separated but has been archivally repaired. There are diagonal pencil lines striking through the text of the note itself, and one of them barely touches the signature. Folds touch the signature, and there are remnants on the back from prior mounting in an autograph album. There is an ink notation "Andrew Johnson. President.” in another hand. Overall the piece is in fair to good condition. Johnson has signed in pencil. It is fascinating that he thought it necessary to add his title, “Pres." Unframed. _____________
