William Orville Douglas, 1898-1980. Associate Justice, Supreme Court of the United States, 1939-1975.  Typed Letter Signed, one page, quarto, on engraved stationery of the Supreme Court of the United States, Washington, D.C., January 31, 1949. With original envelope.

Douglas sends his autograph. In part: “I am sorry I do not have a photograph to send you. But I trust this letter will be a satisfactory substitute for your collection."

The letter is in excellent condition, with only normal mailing folds, both of which are well away from the signature. Douglas has signed in black ink. Both the signature and the typewriting are bold. The envelope bears Douglas's typed initials at the upper left. It is slightly soiled and is torn open on the end but is in fine condition overall.
