Franklin D. Roosevelt

Franklin Delano Roosevelt, 1882-1945.  32nd President of the United States, 1933-1945.  Typed Letter Signed, Franklin D. Roosevelt, one page, 8" x 10½", on stationery of the Navy Department, Washington, July 9, 1917.

Some three months after the United States declared war on Germany on April 6, 1917, and entered World War I, Roosevelt, then Assistant Secretary of the Navy, responds to the New York Collector of Customs, who had urged the appointment of friends to positions in the Navy.

This letter, which is in excellent condition, bears a beautiful, bold 4¾" full signature by Roosevelt.  It is richly double matted in cattail suede, with an inlaid gilt fillet, and framed in an ornate gilt frame along with a contemporary portrait of FDR as Assistant Secretary of the Navy and an engraved brass identification plate.
