Harry S. Truman, 1884-1972.  33rd President of the United States.  Typed Letter Signed, Harry, one page, 7¼" x 10½ on personal stationery, Independence, Missouri, June 30, 1960.

Former President Truman writes a note of thanks to his first cousin, Major General Ralph E. Truman.  In full:  "You do not know how very much I appreciated the visit with you the other morning and I am most happy to have the onyx donkey which you brought to me from Mexico."

This letter exemplifies Truman's penchant for writing letters.  Undoubtedly Truman, a lifelong staunch Democrat, thanked his cousin for the onyx donkey when he brought it to him.  Still he saw the need to communicate formally in writing as well.  Such small courtesies were typical of Truman.

Ralph Emerson Truman (1880-1962) commanded the 35th Division, a National Guard division of which Harry S. Truman was a member during World War I.  He went through the Spanish-American War, World War I, and World War II before retiring from active duty.  He later chaired the Historical Committee of the 35th Division Association.  As President, Harry S. Truman often attended the 35th Division reunions.

Correspondence between presidents and their relatives is not commonly available.  This letter has excellent provenance, because we obtained it directly from a member of the Truman family.  To our knowledge it has not been on the market before.

This letter is in mint condition, with only two normal mailing folds, neither of which affects the signature.  Truman has signed in black ballpoint pen, which is somewhat unusual, since Truman generally used a fountain pen.

Unframed.    Please ask us about custom framing this piece.
