Johnson, almost certainly as President, signs an Inauguration Day cover

commemorating his 1965 inaugural

Lyndon Baines Johnson, 1908–1973.  36th President of the United States, 1963–1969.  Cacheted Inauguration Day cover signed Lyndon B. Johnson.

This cover, which commemorates Johnson’s 1965 inauguration, has one of the nicest Johnson signatures that we have ever seen.  The President has signed this cover with a large 3” black fountain pen signature alongside his image in the cachet.  Given the form of his signature, Johnson has almost certainly signed this as President.

The engraved image of Johnson is taken from a photograph of Johnson by Chase Studios of Washington, D.C.  The cachet, which reads “Inauguration of Lyndon B. Johnson,” identifies Johnson as “36th President of the United States” and is dated “january 20th 1965.”  The cover bears a 5¢ American flag stamp with an Inauguration Day cancellation at Washington, D.C., January 20, 1965.

Johnson took office as President in his own right after winning election by a landslide.  After acceding to the presidency on November 22, 1963, upon the assassination of President John F. Kennedy, Johnson ran for the office in 1964 against Republican Senator Barry Goldwater of Arizona.  Johnson and his running mate, Minnesota Senator Hubert H. Humphrey, won 44 states and the District of Columbia with more than 61% of the popular vote.  Johnson won the electoral vote 486–52.

This cover is in fine condition.  There is slight brushing to the end of Johnson’s signature, likely from Johnson’s own hand.  The envelope flap has never been sealed, and the glue on it is fresh and intact.  A couple of small stains along the bottom edge of the front of the cover and one on the back flap affect nothing.  Were it not for those, this would be graded extra fine.

Unframed.
