Nice brown ink signature of Young on a card

Brigham Young, 1801–1877.  American religious leader; Second President of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, 1847–1877.  2” x 3¾” card signed Brigham Young

Young joined the Mormon church in 1832 and was ordained a member of the original Quorum of the Twelve Apostles in 1835.  A power struggle for leadership of the church ensued when Joseph Smith was killed in 1844, but ultimately the leadership fell to the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles, of which Young was president.

Because of conflict with other factions, Young led his followers to the Salt Lake Valley, where they arrived on July 24, 1847.  He organized a new First Presidency of the church and was declared president on December 27, 1847.  He organized the Mormon Tabernacle Choir, and he presided over the groundbreaking for Salt Lake Temple and oversaw its construction.

Because of the outcome of the Mexican War, the United States controlled the Salt Lake Valley by the time Young and his followers arrived.  He founded Salt Lake City and later became the first governor of the Utah Territory and organized the founding of what is now the University of Utah.

Young also donated the land in Provo, Utah, to establish an academy for Mormon children, the predecessor of today’s Brigham Young University.

Young has signed this card in brown ink.  The card has a light fingerprint at the bottom edge underneath, but well away from, the “g” in “Brigham.”  Otherwise the card is crisp and overall in very fine condition, with a couple of pinpoint size spots that affect nothing.  The signature is perfect for framing with a photograph of Young.
