1710104 Samuel L. Clemens Mark Twain Scroll down to see images of the item below the description
Samuel Langhorne Clemens, better known as Mark Twain, 1835–1910. American author and humorist. Dual signatures, Saml L. Clemens / Mark Twain, on a 2½” x 4¼” card.
A native Missourian, Twain grew up in Hannibal, a Mississippi River town in northeast Missouri that formed the backdrop for Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn. Twain said that he took his pen name from the riverboatmen’s call when the boat reached safe water depth—two fathoms, 12 feet, or “mark twain.” This card is virtually pristine. It is clean and bright and still has its original sheen. Twain has signed with a beautiful dual signature, signing his renowned pen name beneath his given name in brown fountain pen. He has added a paraph beneath the second signature. There is slight brushing to the “S” in “Saml,” likely from Twainʼs own hand. The card has a couple of small indentions in the upper right corner, not affecting the signatures. Overall the card is in very fine condition. This piece would be beautiful framed with a portrait of Twain. Unframed. Click here for information about custom framing this piece.
