Bold signature of the five-star general

Douglas MacArthur, 1880—1964.  General of the Army.  Bold signature, Douglas MacArthur, on 4⅜&drquo; x 6&drquo; notepad stationery of the Waldorf Astoria Hotel, New York.  With original envelope.

This blue-black fountain pen signature of General MacArthur was sent in response to an autograph collectorʼs request.  MacArthur likely signed it between 1952 and 1964, when he lived in the Waldorf Astoria, on whose vintage memorandum notepad stationery he has signed.  The accompanying envelope, which has no postmark, bears the letterhead of the Department of the Army at 90 Church Street in New York, which is the federal building that today houses the United States Postal Service and other federal and some New York state offices.

This piece is in very fine condition.  Were it not for one horizontal mailing fold, which is well removed from the signature, it would be extra fine.  The accompanying envelope is torn open at the right end, and there is a note in another hand stating that it contains MacArthurʼs autograph.  The signature would be perfect for framing.

Unframed.
