1223806 Henry James
”I walked over to your wonderful retreat one afternoon . . . . I had with me no cards, but begged I shld. be mentioned to you . . . ." Henry James, OM, 1843-1916. American and British author. Autographed Letter Signed, Henry James, three pages (front and back of front leaf and front of attached integral leaf), 4½" x 7", Lamb House, Rye, Sussex, September 12, 1907. James invites “Mr. Marshall" to join him and another friend for lunch. In full: "Our friend J. B. Piaker comes down on Saturday next to spend Sunday with me, & it would give me great pleasure if you should be able to come down to luncheon with us at 1.45 on the latter day. That is if you are in residence. I walked over to your wonderful retreat one afternoon two or three weeks ago & you were absent, I learned. I had with me no cards, but begged I shld. be mentioned to you, & to Mrs. Marshall, as yours very truly . . ." The American-born James was regarded as one of the leading figures in 19th-century literary realism. He insisted that literature be realistic—and that good novels should be interesting and show life in action. He brought a new depth to narrative fiction through his use of point of view, interior monologue, and possibly unreliable narrators. Among his masterpieces were Daisy Miller (1879) and The Portrait of a Lady (1881). James split time between the United States and Europe until he settled in England for good about age 20. He became a British citizen in 1915, a year before his death. This is a very nice letter, boldly written in black fountain pen in James's distinctive hand. The letter has one horizontal mailing fold, which does not affect the signature, and a few scattered spots. Overall it is in fine condition. Unframed. _____________
