V. K. Wellington Koo

Bold signature of the Nationalist Chinese diplomat

Ku Wei-chün, also known as V. K. Wellington Koo, 1887-1985.  President of the Republic of China, 1926-1927; Premier, 1924, 1926-1927.  Bold signature, V. K. Wellington Koo, on a 1¾" x 3¾" card

Koo, the only Chinese head of state to use a Western name publicly, was very prominent in Nationalist Chinese history.  For a period of eight months, from October 1926 to June 1927, while serving as its Minister of Foreign Affairs, Koo doubled as acting Premier and interim President of the Republic of China.  His successor as President was Generalissimo Chaing Kai-shek.

Koo, who was educated in China and the United States and earned a Ph. D. in international law and diplomacy from Columbia University in New York, began his political career in 1912 as the English Secretary to President Yuan Shikai.  In 1915, he became China's minister to the United States and Cuba.  Four years later, he was a member of the Chinese delegation to the Paris Peace Conference.  He was involved in forming the League of Nations and served as China's first representative to the League.

After serving as acting Premier and interim President, Koo returned to the League of Nations to protest Japan's invasion of Manchuria in 1931.  He was China's ambassador to France from 1936 until Nazi Germany conquered France in 1940.  He then served as ambassador to Great Britain until 1946.  He was one of the founding members of the United Nations in 1945 and then served ten years as China's ambassador to the United States from 1946 to 1956.  After he retired from diplomacy in 1956, he became a judge of the International Court of Justice at The Hague, where he served until 1967.

This is a magnificent signature.  Koo has signed this card boldly in blue fountain pen.  The card is laid down to a larger, 3¼" x 4¼" card.  The signature is extra fine.
