War-Dated Prisoner Letter from the Dachau Concentration Camp

“I am hale and hearty and, with heartfelt love, wish you health and that you will [soon] see Maldika and me.

Please do not forget Maldika, for I have great confidence that I will meet and chat with him."

Manuscript Letter Signed, Zabtocki Remuald, four pages, 5¾" x 8¼", on inmate stationery of the Dachau Concentration Camp, Dachau, Germany, January 18, 1942.  In German, with translation.

The differences in the handwriting and the signature on this letter suggest that the inmate, who writes to his wife and daughter, was at least unable to write German, if not illiterate beyond signing his name.  At least two other people wrote the text of this letter.  The German is considerably ungrammatical, which, along with the names of the inmate and his family members, suggests that the inmate and the scriveners were Polish.

The inmate writes, in full:  "Dear Mother and Daughter!  After the holidays I received your lovely letter and money, for which I thank you warmly.  I am hale and hearty and, with heartfelt love, wish you health and that you will [soon] see Maldika and me.  Please do not forget Maldika, for I have great confidence that I will meet and chat with him.  Please, dear good mother, write me what Mietek, Olek, and the entire family are doing.  Why does Mietek not write and send me anything?  I greet and kiss [you] a thousand times.  Your loving dad and father, until I see you again soon."  In a postscript, he adds:  " ___ are not allowed to send packages.  Please send no large or small packages, because they will only be opened and returned."

The letter has the censor's stamp on the inside, at the bottom of the third page.

The upper left corners of the front and integral leaves are missing, and about one inch has been removed at the bottom of the integral leaf, with consequent loss of text.  Fold splits have been archivally repaired.  The letter is in fair condition and is priced accordingly.

Unframed.
