Frances Clara Folsom Cleveland Preston, 1864-1947. First Lady of the United States, 1886-1889, 1893-1897. Engraved Executive Mansion vignette signed Frances F. Cleveland.
Mrs. Cleveland, at age 21 the youngest First Lady in American history, was the first First Lady to sign Executive Mansion vignettes such as this one. The earliest appeared in 1888, but most, like this one, date from President Cleveland's second term, 1893-1897. This one comes from a collection assembled in the mid- to late 1890s.
These vignettes appear to be scarce, although Mrs. Cleveland's autograph material otherwise is common. We have not found any signed Executive Mansion engravings in either recent auction records or dealer inventories.
Mrs. Cleveland has beautifully signed this 3¾" x 4⅞" vignette with a bold 4" fountain pen signature. The piece has an erased old pencil notation in the lower left corner and mounting traces on the back. Overall it is in fine to very fine condition.
