George Herbert Walker Bush, 1924.  41st President of the United States, 1989-1993.  Political content Typed Letter Signed, George, one page, 7¼" x 10½", on personal stationery, April 1, 1980.

This letter shows Bush's gregarious style.  At the time he wrote it, he was opposing Ronald Reagan for the 1980 Republican presidential nomination.  He thanks a supporter in Reagan's home state of California for his letter to Rolling Stone magazine and, in a humorous aside, notes that he does not regularly read the magazine himself.  In full:  “Thank you for that terrific letter you wrote to Rolling Stone!  Let me know if they print it.  (As you may have guessed, I'm not a regular reader of Stone.)  /  I appreciate all you're doing for me in Merced County.  I'm counting on you not only for the California Primary, but on through the November election.

Bush lost the nomination to Reagan but went on to become his running mate, and the Reagan-Bush team won easily.  Bush served eight years as Vice President before being elected President himself.

The son of a United States Senator, Bush was one of the best prepared men to hold the presidency.  He served two terms in the United States House of Representatives, 1967-1971; as the United States Ambassador to the United Nations, 1971-1973; as chairman of the Republican National Committee, 1973-1974; as chief United States liaison officer to the People's Republic of China, 1974-1976; as director of the Central Intelligence Agency, 1976-1977; and as Vice President of the United States, 1981-1989.  He was elected President of the United States in November 1988 and was inaugurated on January 20, 1989.  He lost his reelection bid to Bill Clinton in 1992.

Bush is only the second President—John Adams was the first—whose son was also elected President of the United States.  George W. Bush was elected to succeed Clinton in 2000.

Bush has signed this letter with a beautiful blue signature.  The letter has two normal mailing folds, neither of which affects the signature, and minor age toning that is not as dark on the actual letter as the scan below suggests.  It is in fine condition.
