Wallis, Duchess of Windsor

Bessie Wallis Warfield Simpson, 1896-1986.  Duchess of Windsor, 1937-1986.  Vintage black-and-white portrait photograph boldly signed, Wallis  /  Duchess of Windsor

The back of the photo bears the stamp of Wide World Photos, the photojournalism arm of the Associated Press, and a notation of the year 1937, the year of Wallis's marriage to Edward, Duke of Windsor.

The marriage of Wallis, an American, to Edward was her third.  Edward acceded to the throne as King Edward VIII in January 1936 and soon made clear his intention to marry Wallis, who by then was seeking a divorce from her second husband, Ernest Simpson.  Because she was a divorcee, however, Wallis was unacceptable to the British government, and in particular Prime Minister Stanley Baldwin.  Faced with choosing between Wallis and the throne, Edward abdicated on December 11, 1936.  He and Wallis were married at Chateau de Candé in France on June 3, 1937.

This photo is in fine condition.  Minor handling creases well away from the signature do not detract from it.  The photo is handsomely matted in burgundy suede and etched gold and framed in gilt with an engraved plate.

A History In Ink framed original.
