Beautiful photograph of Truman undoubtedly signed as President

Harry S. Truman, 18841972.  33rd President of the United States, 19451953.  Beautiful 7¾” x 9¾” black-and-white portrait photograph inscribed and signed To Sam Long, with best wishes.  /  Harry S. Truman.

This is a beautiful formal portrait photograph of a relaxed and confident President Truman by Miller of Washington, whose embossed stamp appears at the lower left.  In more than 30 years of collecting Truman’s autograph material personally, we have never seen this image before.  We could not locate it online in either the Truman Library collection or the collection of the Library of Congress, which has a large collection of images of notable Washingtonians that Miller donated in the mid-1950s.

Although the photo is undated, Truman has undoubtedly signed it as President.  The form of the signature dates it sometime between April 1945 and late October 1951.

Truman has inscribed and signed this photograph in brown ink.  The photo has some silvering around the edges and in darker areas of the folds of Truman’s suit, but it is evident only if the photo is turned just right in the light.  None of the silvering affects Truman’s face.  There are tape remnants at the top edge on the back from prior framing.  Overall the photograph is in fine to very fine condition.

Unframed.  Please click here for information about custom framing this piece.
