William McKinley, 1843-1901. 25th President of the United States, 1897-1901. Typed Letter Signed, William McKinley, one page, 7" x 8¾", on stationery of the Executive Mansion, Washington, [D.C.], November 27, 1900. Three weeks after his reelection, McKinley thanks a lady for a newspaper clipping and her congratulations. He writes: “I have received your letter of the 19th instant, and have been much interested in the clipping which you were good enough to enclose. / Please accept my cordial thanks for your message of congratulations, and believe me . . . ." McKinley, an Ohio Republican, carried 28 states and received 51.6% of the popular vote to easily defeat his Democratic opponent, William Jennings Bryan, on November 6, 1900, in a rematch of the 1896 election. McKinley won the electoral vote 292-155. McKinley served only six month of his second term, however, before he was shot by Leon Czolgosz at the Pan-American Exposition in Buffalo, New York on September 6, 1901, and died eight days later. The assassination catapulted Theodore Roosevelt into the presidency. McKinley has signed this letter with a full signature. The letter has bisecting folds, some wrinkles and stains, and an archivally repaired split at the top of the vertical fold, and it is toned from prior framing. The signature is a bit browned but is nevertheless very readable. Overall the letter is in very good condition. Unframed.
