Franklin Delano Roosevelt, 1882-1945. 32nd President of the United States, 1933-1945. New York Executive Mansion card boldly signed Franklin D. Roosevelt.
This is an engraved card embossed in gold with the New York state seal. Roosevelt boldly signed it in black fountain pen as Governor of New York.
Roosevelt was elected Governor of New York twice, in 1928 and 1930. His election was a political comeback against considerable odds. Roosevelt served two terms in the New York Senate before President Woodrow Wilson appointed him Assistant Secretary of the Navy in 1913, a job Roosevelt held for seven years. In 1920, Roosevelt ran for vice president with Democratic presidential nominee James M. Cox but lost to the Republicans in the general election. Roosevelt contracted poliomyelitis in 1921, however, and despite his courageous efforts to overcome the crippling illness, he never really regained use of his atrophied legs. His wife, Eleanor, helped to keep him in the public eye by becoming more politically active herself. Her efforts paid off, and Roosevelt was elected Governor of New York.
In 1932, with the nation mired in the darkest days of the Great Depression, Roosevelt was elected President of the United States. FDR saw the nation through the Great Depression and World War II. The exigencies of war led to his unprecedented elections to third and fourth terms in 1940 and 1944. Historians rank him among the top five American presidents.
This card is excellent for framing. It shows a bit of soiling, not particularly obtrusive, and has mounting traces on the back. Overall it is in very fine condition.
