Queen Beatrix

Beatrix Wilhelmina Armgard of Orange-Nassau, 1938.  Queen of the Kingdom of the Netherlands, 1980.  Extremely rare color photograph of the Queen and her consort, Prince Claus, signed Beatrix on the mount.

This is an exceptional portrait of Queen Beatrix and her consort, Prince Claus George Willem Otto Frederik Geert von Amsberg (1926-2002).  The photograph itself measures 3 x 5 and is mounted on a 5 x 8 white mount, with integral leaf attached, blind embossed with the crown.  The Queen has signed with a large 3 signature alongside a printed signature of Prince Claus.

The oldest child of Queen Juliana and Prince Bernhard, Beatrix was born in the Netherlands. She escaped with her family to Britain when Nazi Germany invaded the Netherlands in May 1940 and, a month later, fled with her family to Canada.  The family returned to the Netherlands August 1945.

Beatrix married Prince Claus, a German diplomat, in 1966.  Because Claus had served in the German army during World War II, the marriage ignited protests among some sections of Dutch society.  The Dutch parliament had, however, consented to the marriage, and Claus became a Dutch citizen.  He received the title of Prince of the Netherlands, and in time he became one of the most popular members of the royal family.

Beatrix acceded to the throne on April 30, 1980, upon the abdication of Queen Juliana.  As queen, she represents the Netherlands both at home and abroad and takes an active and interested role in Dutch political life.  Privately, she enjoys sculpting, riding, sailing, playing tennis, and skiing.  She is particularly interested in sculpture, painting, ballet, and music.

This is a beautiful photograph in very fine condition.  Only a small, almost imperceptible crease in the upper right corner of the mount prevents it from being extra fine.  The Queen has signed with a felt-tipped pen, which has slightly browned.

Unframed.
