Chester Nimitz

Click on image for larger size

Chester William Nimitz, 1885-1966. American Fleet Admiral; Commander In Chief of Pacific Naval Forces in World War II. 6" x 8" black-and-white photograph of Nimitz, inscribed and signed on the lower white margin With best wishes to Abe the Newsboy / C. W. Nimitz.

The photograph shows Nimitz in the uniform of a captain and thus likely dates to the period from June 1927 to June 1938, when Nimitz held that rank. Nimitz has inscribed and signed the photo to Abraham "Abe the Newsboy" Hollandersky, who fought 387 wrestling and 1,309 boxing matches, mostly aboard Navy ships or for the benefit of Naval Relief. He fought out of New London, Connecticut, where he sold newspapers to sailors. He claimed that he was on personal terms with several Presidents and most of the senior Navy officers through World War II.

The photograph shows some wear around the edges that does not detract from the image and inscription, and overall it is in fine condition. It is mounted to a backing board and is framed floated above a dark blue mat, surrounded by dark blue and gray mats (there is slight rippling to the top mat at the upper right), and framed in a gilt wood frame. We did not frame the piece.
