Uncommon, extra fine presidential portrait inscribed and signed to a relative
Harry S. Truman, 1884–1972. 33rd President of the United States, 1945–1953. Beautiful 11” x 13½” black-and-white portrait photograph inscribed and signed to a relative, To Ruth Hill Dickenson, with kindest regards. / Harry S. Truman.
This is a magnificent photograph of Truman that he has signed to one of his relatives. We acquired it directly from the family. Presidential portraits inscribed and signed to relatives are scarce and desirable. So, too, are large format photographs of presidents such as this one, particularly in this condition. This would therefore be an outstanding addition to any Truman or presidential collection.
Truman almost certainly signed this undated photograph as President. According to the Truman Library’s records, this and several other similar poses were taken in the White House on September 29, 1951. This is the Truman Library Accession Number 58-588. The Library’s note says that the envelope for the proof said, “favorite. Taken by J.L.A.” The signature is typical of those in of Truman his later White House years and likely dates from the period between October 1951, when Truman began consistently signing the flat top on the “r” in “Truman,” and January 20, 1953, when he left office.
Truman has inscribed and signed this photograph in brown ink. The inscription and signature show a bit of fading from prior framing, but both are still nicely readable. The photograph is in extra fine condition and would be magnificent framed.
