Harry S. Truman, 1884-1972. 33rd President of the United States, 1945-1953. Uncommon dual-signed set of Truman’s Memoirs, both volumes inscribed and signed to a relative. The first is signed To Janis Dickenson / Kind regards / from / Harry S. Truman / 4-1-65, and the second is signed Best wishes to / Janis Dickenson / from / Harry S. Truman / 4-1-65.
This set is highly desirable for three reasons:
• First, Truman inscribed and signed this set to one of his relatives. Presidential letters and other items signed to relatives do not come on the market often and, accordingly, are difficult to find.
• Second, Truman almost always signed only the first volume of his memoirs, Year of Decisions. Occasionally it is possible to find a signed copy of the second volume, Years of Trial and Hope. But it is very difficult to find a set in which Truman inscribed and signed both volumes to the same person on the same day. We recently saw a similar set offered for $2,000.
• Third, Volume I of this set is Doubleday’s special Kansas City Limited First Edition, which was limited to 20,615 copies. It is the true first of the hardback editions, released in Kansas City before the regular trade edition was released. It contains special endpapers with a red-and-white map of Missouri, and it is stamped KANSAS CITY EDITION on the spine. Volume II is likewise a first edition but is not the Kansas City edition.
Truman has inscribed and signed both of these in blue ballpoint. The books show only a tiny bit of wear and overall are in extra fine to near mint condition. The dust jackets are in fair to poor condition, which is not uncommon for this set, but the books themselves are beautiful and would be wonderful for any Truman collection.
