702205 Duke of Wellington Scroll down to see images of the item below the description
Field Marshal Arthur Wellesley, 1769-1852. First Duke of Wellington. Fine free frank, signed Wellington, as Prime Minister, on an address panel accomplished in Wellington's hand. Wellington was widely regarded as one of the leading British military and political figures of the first half of the 19th Century. He rose to prominence during the Napoleonic Wars and ultimately commanded the British troops that defeated Napoleon at the Battle of Waterloo on June 18, 1815. He received the Order of the Bath as a result. He served as Tory prime minister 1828-1830. He was also the godfather of Queen Victoria's seventh child, Prince Arthur, in 1850. This free frank bears an 1829 postal marking, which dates it to the period when Wellington served as Prime Minister. It is slightly irregularly trimmed, resulting in the loss of portions of two words, but Wellington's signature is unaffected. There are also a small tear at the upper left, some minor stains and soiling, and pencil notations, identifying Wellington, in another hand. Overall the piece is in fine condition. Unframed.
