Roosevelt signs a postcard portrait of himself

Theodore Roosevelt, 1858-1919.  26th President of the United States.  3½" x 5½" post card photograph with a stately image of the President, signed T. Roosevelt.

This is a lithographed image of Roosevelt, who has signed it in blue-gray fountain pen across his chest at the bottom of the card.  The signature crosses Roosevelt's coat and tie but adequately contrasts to the background.

When President William McKinley was assassinated in 1901, Roosevelt, at age 42, Roosevelt became the youngest president in United States history.

Roosevelt enjoyed the White House, and he used presidential power to the fullest, vigorously leading the country in progressive reforms and a strong foreign policy.  He thought himself a “steward of the people" who should take whatever action was necessary for the public good unless the constitution or law expressly prohibited it.  “I did not usurp power,” he wrote, “but I did greatly broaden the use of executive power."

Roosevelts largest accomplishments were on the world stage.  He liked to say, “Speak softly and carry a big stick.” He sent the United States Navys Great White Fleet around the world in a goodwill tour that doubled as a show of American strength.  He secured the acquisition of the Panama Canal Zone and the construction of the canal, and brokered peace in the Russo-Japanese War, for which he won the Nobel Peace Prize.

Domestically, Roosevelt aggressively enforced the anti-trust laws.  An outdoorsman, he also favored conservation, adding large amounts of land to national forests in the West, reserving lands for public use, and fostering large irrigation projects.

Roosevelt left the White House in 1909 but became dissatisfied with the policies of his hand-picked successor, William Howard Taft.  He ran unsuccessfully on a third-party ticket in 1912, splitting the Republican vote and giving the White House to Woodrow Wilson.  Roosevelt, who also detested Wilson, unsuccessfully sought the Republican nomination again in 1916.  He died in 1919.

This is an excellent example for a collector who does not want to incur the substantial cost of a larger signed photograph of Roosevelt.  The upper right corner shows the mark of a previous bend, well removed from the signature and Roosevelt's image; the corners are a bit worn; and there are a pencil notation and light soiling on the unused back side of the card.  Overall the piece is in fine condition.
