607201 William McKinley Scroll down to see images of the item below the description
William McKinley, 1843-1901. 25th President of the United States, 1897-1901. Very fine 14” x 17” Document Signed, W McKinley, as Governor of Ohio, April 6, 1895. This is a beautiful appointment document in which McKinley appoints a justice of the peace for Windsor Township in Ashtabula County, Ohio, “authorizing and empowering him to execute and discharge, all and singular, the duties appertaining to said office; and to enjoy all the privileges and immunities thereof.” McKinley, a Republican, was a Civil War veteran, a brevet major in the Ohio Volunteer Infantry. He served seven terms in the United States House of Representatives and two terms as governor of Ohio before he defeated William Jennings Bryan for the presidency in 1896. As President, McKinley led the United States in a war against Spain, as a result of which the United States annexed the Philippines, Guam, and Puerto Rico. He defeated Bryan again in 1900 but served only six months of his second term before he was shot by an anarchist at the Pan American Exposition in Buffalo, New York. He died eight days later, the third President to be assassinated. This document is one of the best of its type that we have seen in a long time. It is considerably whiter than the photograph of the entire document below shows. The other two images, digital scans, more closely show the nice color of the piece. The seal is intact, and the document has a beautiful engraving at the top. McKinley has signed with a huge 4” signature. There are one horizontal and three vertical folds, a couple of small holes in the fold in the top blank margin, which could be matted out if the piece were framed, and a couple of pinholes by the tail of, but not touching, McKinley’s signature. Overall the document is in very fine condition. It would be beautiful in a framed display. Unframed. Please ask us about custom framing this piece.
