King George III

George William Frederick, 1738-1820.  King of Great Britain and Ireland, 1760-1820; nominally King of France, 1760-1801; King of Hanover, 1814-1820.  Vellum Document Signed, George R, one page, 13½" x 9¼", Court of St. James's, September 24, 1808.

This scribbled signature on this document shows the effects of the King's failing eyesight.  A hereditary disease known as porphyria eventually blinded him by either 1808, the year this document was signed, or 1809, depending upon the source that one consults.

We could not scan the full document because of its size, but we have scanned the bulk of it.  The King's paper and wax seal is fully intact.  The scans also show a close-up of the King's signature, which is slightly obscured by the seal.

This document is soiled but is otherwise in fine condition.  It has three vertical folds, none of which touches the King's signature, and there is slight wrinkling in the lower right corner.
