Neil Armstrong

Nice copy of First on the Moon, signed in person by Apollo XI Commander Neil Armstrong

Neil Alden Armstrong, 1930-2012.  American astronaut; first man on the moon.  Copy of  First on the Moon, signed in person, Neil Armstrong, on the half title page.  With notarized affidavit of provenance.

This book has never been on the autograph market before.  Armstrong, who as the commander of Apollo XI became the first astronaut to walk on the moon, signed it at a celebrity golf tournament in Houston, Texas, in the early 1990s.  The book comes with an affidavit of provenance from the collector whose relative obtained the signature and later traded the book to him for other collectibles.

The dust jacket of First on the Moon: A Voyage With Neil Armstrong, Michael Collins, and Edwin E. Aldrin, Jr., describes the book as "the exclusive story of Apollo 11 and the always thrilling and historic personal experiences of the three astronauts who put man on the moon. . . . It is an exclusive and official account, the way the voyage was, as seen by the men who experienced it."  The collaborators, Life senior editor Gene Farmer and Life staff writer Dora Jane Hamblin, spent months with the Apollo XI astronauts and their families.  This book, the product of their work, "is the astronautsʼ own book, the one in which mankind's greatest undertaking of the [20th] century is told."

The book has a beautiful 3¼" black ballpoint signature by Armstrong, who has signed on the half title page.  The dust jacket is chipped and tattered, but the book itself is very nice.  The black cloth cover is blind embossed with the book's title, and the spine is gold foil stamped.  The book contains 28 pages of black-and-white photographs.  The pages are clean, without any markings that we can see other than Armstrong's signature, and the binding is tight.  The corners are slightly bumped, but the edges are not shelf worn.  Overall the piece, except for the dust jacket, is in fine to very fine condition, and the autograph is extra fine.

This is an outstanding momento from the quintessential flight of the American space effort.  It belongs in the finest of collections.
