I recall with great pleasure my association with you in the Senate

Hugo Lafayette Black, 1886-1971. Senator from Alabama, 1927-1937; Associate Justice, United States Supreme Court, 1937-1971. Typed Letter Signed, Hugo L. Black, one page, 8" x 10½", on engraved stationery of the Supreme Court of the United States, Washington, D.C., January 9, 1939.  With original mailing envelope.

Justice Black replies to his former Senate colleague, former Illinois Senator William H. Dieterich, thanking him for his holiday message and inviting him to visit him at the Supreme Court.  He writes:  I greatly appreciated your Christmas and New Years telegram.  /  I recall with great pleasure my association with you in the Senate and want you to know that my wife and I wish for you and your family health and happiness throughout the coming years.  When you come to Washington, please come to see me.  /  With kind regards, I am  /  Sincerely your  friend . . . ."

Black and Dieterich were both Democrats.  Black was elected to the United States Senate in 1926 and reelected in 1932. He strongly supported the New Deal policies of President Franklin D. Roosevelt, including FDR's infamous Court-packing plan, and Roosevelt made him his first appointment to the Supreme Court on August 17, 1937.  Dieterich (1876-1940) served a term in the House of Representatives before being elected to the Senate in 1932.  He served one term but did not run for reelection in 1938.  He reentered the practice of law in Illinois, but he died on a business trip in late 1940.

This letter has two normal mailing folds and a slight soiling.  Justice Black has signed it in black fountain pen.  Attesting to Black's honesty, the words "Official Business / Penalty For Private Use, $300 " have been scratched out on the accompanying mailing envelope, and a 3¢ stamp has been placed beneath them.  Both the letter and the envelope are in fine condition.

Unframed.  Please ask us about custom framing this piece.
