“Thank you from the bottom of my heart for that kind message . . . " Franklin Delano Roosevelt, 1882–1945. 32nd President of the United States, 1933-1945. Typed Letter Signed, Franklin D. Roosevelt, one page, with integral leaf attached, 7" x 9", on stationery of The White House, Washington, [D.C.], January 2, 1940. With original mailing envelope. The President thanks former Illinois Senator William H. Dieterich for his holiday message. In full: “Thank you from the bottom of my heart for that kind message you sent me. I am deeply conscious of the friendly spirit which prompted your thought of me and am grateful for what you say. / With all good wishes for a Happy New Year." Dieterich (1876-1940), a Democrat, served a term in the House of Representatives before being elected to the Senate in 1932. He entered the Senate when Roosevelt took office on March 4, 1933, and his term expired January 3, 1939. He reentered the practice of law in Illinois, but he died on a business trip in late 1940. Roosevelt has signed with a very large, 4½" blue fountain pen signature. The letter has one horizontal mailing fold, which does not affect the signature. It is lightly toned from the envelope on the back of the integral leaf. It is in fine to very fine condition and would be beautiful in a framed display. The accompanying mailing envelope is soiled and is also in fine condition. Unframed. Click here for information about custom framing this piece.
