“Hoping that all our friends will be at the Polls on the 12th instant."

James Abram Garfield, 1831-1881.  20th President of the United States.  Manuscript Letter Signed, J. A. Garfield, one page, 8" x 10¼", on engraved personal stationery, Mentor, Ohio, October 4, 1880.  With original mailing envelope.

Garfield, then the Republican presidential nominee, seeks information about the likely vote in the upcoming Ohio congressional election on October 12, 1880—likely hoping to predict the result in the national election less than a month later.  In full:  “The canvass has now proceeded so far that by this time our friends are doubtless able to make a tolerably accurate estimate of the result in their several localities.  Please write me what in your judgment the vote in your county will be, as compared with that of last year.  /  Hoping that all our friends will be at the Polls on the 12th instant."

Garfield has signed this excellent political letter with a 3" black fountain pen signature.  The letter has one horizontal and two vertical mailing folds, one of which passes through Garfield's signature.  The horizontal fold has split but has been archivally repaired with Japanese rice paper.  Overall the letter is in fine condition.  The accompanying envelope has been opened and is typically soiled but is also in fine condition.

Unframed.
