Rutherford Birchard Hayes, 1822-1893.  21st President of the United States, 1881-1885.  Autograph Letter Signed, R. B. Hayes, one page, 4½" x 7", with integral leaf attached, on stationery of the Executive Mansion, Washington, [D.C.], January 13, 1880.

Hayes writes to General Francis A. Walker, who headed the Census Bureau, with apparent reference to civil service appointments, still largely political, in the bureau.  In full:  “Touching the appts of last night, I request that you say nothing.  I think I see two changes that, on reflection, ought to be made. One is your case in New Haven."  Hayes has marked the letter “Private."

Interestingly, writing just after the start of a new year, Hayes makes a common mistake—writing "1879,” which he then corrected to "1880."

The letter has one horizontal mailing fold, barely touching two letters of the text, and mounting traces on the back of the integral leaf.  It is in very fine condition.

Unframed.
