John F. Kennedy

John Fitzgerald Kennedy, 1917-1963.  35th President of the United States, 1961-1963.  Copy of Kennedy’s book Profiles In Courage, boldly signed John Kennedy.

This is an excellent edition of Profiles In Courage, for which Kennedy won the 1955 Pulitzer Prize.  The book highlights the courage of eight United States Senators who defied their political parties or public opinion despite the certain retribution that they received afterward.  Kennedy, with substantial help from speechwriter Ted Sorensen and research assistants at the Library of Congress, wrote the book while he was bedridden following back surgery in 1954.  It quickly became a best seller.

This hardback edition of Profiles In Courage, published by Harper & Brothers of New York in 1956, comes ultimately from the estate of George Foble, who met Kennedy at the Loyola College alumni dinner on February 18, 1958.

The book is bound in light blue cloth boards with a black, gilt-embossed spine.  If it is not a first edition, it appears to be an early printing.  Unlike later copies, there are no publisher’s notations on the copyright page to tell when the book was printed.  The binding is tight and square, and the pages are bright and clean.  The dust jacket is split and has some soiling and considerable chipping and wear, as the scan below shows.

Kennedy has signed this book in blue ballpoint on the title page.  This would be a nice addition to any Kennedy or presidential book collection.
