1007380 Grover Cleveland Scroll down to see images of the item below the description
Stephen Grover Cleveland, 1837-1908. Governor of New York, 1883-1884; 22nd President of the United States, 1885-1889; 24th President of the United States, 1893-1897. Autograph Letter Signed, Grover Cleveland, one page, with integral leaf attached, 5¼” x 6½”, Princeton, New Jersey, November 14, 1897. With original envelope. Amid Anti-Spanish fervor in the United States, and with the Spanish-American War soon to start in Cuba, Cleveland writes to a student: “It is well to learn all that is taught in schools and colleges; . . . American young men may be called on to deal with conditions involving all that is valuable in our government. / They should do some very hard thinking in these days.” This letter was part of a collection of autograph letters assembled by students at the State Normal School at Emporia, Kansas, now Emporia State University, in the 1890s. Students wrote to prominent Americans to ask for a handwritten letter giving a reminiscence, a favorite sentiment, or a word of advice. Cleveland obligingly sent the latter. The letter has short diagonal folds across the bottom corners, and one fold barely touches Cleveland’s signature. The letter also shows a bit of foxing in the lower right corner, and there are mounting traces on the back. The original envelope is tipped to the inside of the integral leaf. Both the letter and the envelope are in fine condition. Unframed. This item has been sold. |
